Technology and the Age of Exploration

Advancements in technology, valiant journeys, and important people of the Age of Exploration created an impressive step toward the modern era. Improved technologies, such as the compass, which helped sailors along their journey to reach their destination, were promoted during this age. The brave journeys by many men were incredible, like Gil Eanes’ short, but significant voyage across the Green Sea of Darkness. In the Age of Exploration, many important people decided to move beyond their ability, for example Ferdinand Magellan, who circumnavigated the Earth.

Many of the significant improvements of the technology were made during the Age of Exploration. First, the caravel’s smooth hull, lateen sail and two rudders were improved by Prince Henry’s designers for the trips that the sailors had to make. The compass, that is crucial part of any type of journey, which was used for looking at the direction one was going, was promoted throughout this age. Prince Henry’s plan for sailing needed the astrolabe, which determined latitude to prepare for their voyage. Improved maps were part of the technology’s improvements during the Age of Exploration and were used to find their destination.

Additionally, the valiant journeys of many important figures were all very astonishing. Gil Eanes’ voyage across the Green Sea of Darkness was short, but he was the captain of the first successful voyage across the ocean. The well-known journey of Columbus was an exciting journey that led to the Native Americans and discovering of America, which he did not know was America. … Read more

How Car Mechanics Use Technology

Do you know why it’s important to find a good mechanic or a good repair shop to repair your car? The reason: it could save you hundreds of dollars in parts and labor! When we say a “good mechanic” or a “good repair shop”, we’re referring to mechanics who are equipped with the latest technology. You don’t want to entrust your car to a shop with outdated machinery and equipment because it will take longer to arrive at a diagnosis. And the longer a mechanic takes to make a diagnosis, the larger your bill for labor!

Remember that car mechanics charge by the hour.

Car repairs can cover any one or a combination of the following (note that this is not a complete repair list).

• Air conditioning checks

• Air bag checks

• Electrical wiring

• Cables

• Clutch service and repair

• Transmission repair

• Wheel Alignment

• Suspension

• Brakes

• Heating system

• Oil and lubrication

• Battery

• Power windows

Much of the troubleshooting that mechanics use to diagnose a problem is facilitated by car repair technology.

Ever noticed how some lights on your panel come on when something’s wrong? In most cases, an experienced mechanic will know immediately what the problem is, but there are instances where it will take sophisticated technology to lead to an accurate diagnosis.

Sophisticated technology comes in many forms and one popular one is troubleshooting software. Companies like Auto Tech have a software program that car owners can use … Read more

The Role of Technology in Education

In the current age we live in, technology has become an important component. Every day there is some new gadget or software that makes lives easier and improves on the technology and software that already exists. Making lives easier is not, however, the only role technology plays in our lives.

Technology is playing an increasing role in education. As technology advances, it is used to benefit students of all ages in the learning process.

Technology used in the classroom helps students adsorb the material. For example, since some people are visual learners, projection screens linked to computers can allow students to see their notes instead of simply listening to a teacher deliver a lecture.

Software can be used to supplement class curriculum. The programs provide study questions, activities, and even tests and quizzes for a class that can help students continue learning outside the classroom.

Technology has also become part of many curriculums, even outside of computer and technology classes. Students use computers to create presentations and use the Internet to research topics for papers and essays.

Students also learn to use the technology available to them in computer and tech classes. This ensures that after graduation they will be able to use the technology in a work setting, which may put them ahead of someone who didn’t have access to a particular technology or software in their own school setting.

As technology advances, students have better access to educational opportunities like these. When something new and “better” is revealed, … Read more

Technology-Driven Job Search Strategies Have Left Many Older Workers Behind

There has been a major transformation during the last decade or so in the way people look for employment opportunities. Hardcopy resumes and cover letters, newspaper ads, and face-to-face interviews have gradually given way to LinkedIn and Facebook profiles and personal websites, electronically transmitted career materials, job boards and web searches, and Skype interviews.

While technology advances have certainly expanded the scope of opportunities for people to take advantage of in finding great jobs, the benefits have not been equal among all job seekers. Research conducted in recent years has shown that, in general, older workers have not kept pace with their younger counterparts in the use of technology to design and execute job search strategies.

This is troubling since there is plenty of evidence that older workers face greater challenges in finding worthwhile employment. Data from the 2014 Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Displaced Workers Survey show that people aged 50 and over took 5.8 weeks longer to find employment than those aged 30-49 and 10 weeks longer than those aged 20-29.

Data from the 2015 BLS Current Population Survey found similar results; 44.6% of employed workers aged 55 and older lacked employment after 27 weeks compared to 22.2% for people under 25 years of age and 36% for people aged 25-54.

Can Older Workers Learn to Use Technology-driven Job Search Tools?

Older workers are often stereotyped in ways that adversely affect their ability to find worthwhile employment. These stereotypes include:

  • Lack of motivation,
  • Less willing to participate in

I love that I have been born in this day and age and I don’t know how I could have lived at any other time in history. New technological advances have made my life much easier as a home based business owner. I am excited by the possibilities available with technology today and excited by the thoughts of the technology that will be available very soon.

If you are living in the past it is time to change your way of thinking and utilise technology to your own advantage.

Here are three things to think about as a work from home entrepreneur:

Social media and Web 2.0 has changed marketing- The old rules of advertising made it hard for a home based business to compete with bigger companies. The internet, through search engines, web 2.0 and social media has changed everything to the advantage of the smaller operators. Yes, large companies can use the internet but if you target your market right you can still be very successful.

Smart phones have improved people’s lives- I was very late to the idea of a smart phone- even though I have worked in the industry for numerous years. But now, I don’t know how I ever lived without one. I started with a BlackBerry, went to a HTC and … Read more
